With a height of 9.5 metres this monument is one of the
tallest in Brittany. 7 metres are buried in the ground, and the stone
measures 8.7 metres in circumference.
According to scientists this rock of pink granite would come
from a massif situated 4 km away in the south.
According to a first legend the huge stone fell from the sky
to separate angry warriors during a great battle that opposed two brothers.
A second legend says that the big menhir goes one inch deeper
underground every century, for the moon eats one small piece every night,
and that when it disappears it will be the end of times.
THE MONT DOL
Le Mont-Dol (Mount Dol) is one of the seven sacred hills of
ancient Armorica (with Mont-Saint-Michel, Menez Bel Air, Méné-Bré, Mané-Gwen,
Menez Hom and Mont-Saint-Michel-de-Brasparts).
The peoples of the megaliths, the Celts and later the Romans
worshipped their gods on these heights which were privileged places.
The druids, the ovates and the bards came there to say their
prayers to the gods called Teutates, Hu-Kadarn, Koridwen, Lug, Dagda, Kernunos,
Ogme, Epona, Belenos.
